The MT-07 is an affordable, lightweight mid-range sportsbike. Released just after the MT-09, the MT-07 was designed to "Make the intuitive side of riding more fun" - Yamaha Product Planning manager Oliver Grill explained "The bike is more casual, feels cool also at lower speeds. Yet any speed, any gear, if you open up the throttle you will immediately feel the power delivery and enjoy the sound".[5]

The rear shock absorber is placed horizontally within the subframe, allowing for a shorter wheelbase than would otherwise be possible, and to lower the centre of gravity, allowing for better handling. Many components on the motorcycle are designed to reduce weight and keep the centre of gravity low, including the use of a digital LED instrument panel and lightweight plastic fairing on the fuel tank.
